Historical Overview<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
The Medicinal Plants Research Unit was established at the College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad, in 2009. Its primary goal is to promote awareness of medicinal and aromatic plants, study the factors influencing their growth and secondary compound content, and conduct research to advance the cultivation of these plants in Iraq. The unit\u2019s activities include field visits to medicinal plant farms across Iraq, collaboration with various institutions and organizations involved in medicinal plants, joint research projects, participation in conferences and seminars, and involvement in committees under the Ministries of Agriculture and Health. Additionally, the unit has provided scientific consultation and contributed to the preparation of a proposal for the University of Baghdad\u2019s Encyclopedia of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.<\/span><\/div>\n
Through collaboration with the Research and Development Department of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the unit initiated a project on oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus<\/em>), conducting research on factors affecting their growth and their potential in inhibiting cancer growth, in cooperation with experts from the Iraqi Ministry of Health. The unit has also completed numerous postgraduate student projects and published scientific research on medicinal and aromatic plants in reputable local and international journals.<\/span><\/div>\n
Thanks to the efforts of specialists and the support of the Dean of the College of Agriculture, the unit is currently equipping its laboratories with modern technology, devices, and equipment. This will enable the unit to conduct advanced studies and research, particularly in plant tissue analysis, chemical component extraction, and determining their proportions using state-of-the-art tools.<\/span><\/div>\n
The unit is actively engaged in preparing scientific research plans and conducting applied studies on both local and foreign medicinal and aromatic plants. Many of these plants\u2019 genetic resources have been secured through the personal efforts of dedicated unit members committed to the nation\u2019s higher interests.<\/span><\/div>\n

Unit Activities<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
1. Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Cultivation Project:<\/strong><\/span>
\nSince its inception, the Medicinal Plants Research Unit has focused on scientific research related to oyster mushrooms, which are both edible and medically significant due to their high content of anti-cancer compounds, blood clot prevention agents, and cholesterol and blood pressure regulators. The research team has achieved significant success, presenting five studies on mushroom production and storage. They have also identified key medicinal compounds in mushrooms that inhibit tumor growth, in collaboration with the Cancer Research Center at Al-Mustansiriya University. The team has established cooperative relationships with the Ministry of Agriculture, particularly in organic farming and mushroom cultivation, and has participated in numerous training courses both within Iraq and abroad to advance the production of medically beneficial mushrooms.<\/span><\/div>\n
2. Medicinal Plants Research Station:<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe research station focuses on cultivating various species of medicinal and aromatic plants, many of which were imported and grown under Iraq\u2019s harsh conditions to domesticate them and preserve their genetic resources. The station conducts agricultural research to enhance the production of secondary compounds in these plants, including micropropagation techniques and biotechnological applications. Research also covers optimal growth conditions, harvesting, drying, storage, and extraction methods, as well as testing suitable solutions for each plant and quantifying active compounds in their tissues. The unit has published numerous scientific papers in local and international journals and equipped its laboratories with advanced tools to support research. Additionally, the unit has begun constructing greenhouses and other facilities to further its research goals.<\/span><\/div>\n

Unit Objectives<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
The unit\u2019s objectives include:<\/span><\/div>\n

  1. Raising Public Awareness:<\/strong>\u00a0Promoting the cultural and medicinal use of medicinal and aromatic plants through educational and media channels to increase their responsible use in accordance with Iraqi laws.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Establishing a Medicinal Plants Complex:<\/strong>\u00a0Creating a center for medicinal and aromatic plants to support scientific research and provide plant materials for undergraduate and postgraduate students in agriculture, science, and pharmacy.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Conducting Scientific Research:<\/strong>\u00a0Implementing research projects individually or through research teams to produce beneficial hybrids, apply biotechnological methods, and test the efficacy of these plants on laboratory animals.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Developing Agricultural Expertise:<\/strong>\u00a0Training agricultural professionals in the production, packaging, and utilization of medicinal and aromatic plants through workshops and practical courses.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Providing Scientific Consultation:<\/strong>\u00a0Offering technical and scientific advice to government departments, mixed sectors, and private entities in coordination with consulting offices or inter-ministerial cooperation frameworks.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Participating in Conferences:<\/strong>\u00a0Engaging in local and international scientific conferences to promote research activities and showcase the unit\u2019s achievements.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Enhancing Staff Capabilities:<\/strong>\u00a0Contributing to the development of administrative and technical staff through continuous education and training programs.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Fostering Collaboration:<\/strong>\u00a0Working with relevant departments and ministries to develop joint research plans and improve agricultural practices and herbal medicine production.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Producing and Packaging Medicinal Plants:<\/strong>\u00a0Cultivating and packaging medicinal plants from open and protected fields within the unit.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Introducing New Plant Species:<\/strong>\u00a0Introducing rare and new medicinal plant species to produce raw materials for herbal medicine production.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n
