The College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences at the University of Baghdad witnessed the defence of a PhD dissertation titled “Spatial Variation in the Content and Distribution of Minerals in the Sediments of the Euphrates River North and South of the Hindiya Barrage,” presented by **Estabrak Hilal Obaid** from the Department of Soil and Water Resources Sciences.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The study aimed to investigate the spatial (quantitative and qualitative) distribution of mineral composition within different soil fractions in the sediments of the Euphrates River. It also examined the impact of the Hindiya Barrage and the regulators constructed on the tributary streams upstream of the barrage on mineral distribution and variation in the soils irrigated by these waters.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The researcher recommended conducting further studies on the mineral characteristics of Iraqi soils and identifying key indicators of their content and distribution. This would contribute to creating a comprehensive mineral map detailing the presence and distribution of minerals within soil fractions. Additionally, the study suggested minimising the retention of river sediments by implementing mechanisms or designs in the body of future barrages and regulators to prevent sediment accumulation, given its importance for the fertility, chemical, and mineral properties of the soils.<\/span><\/h3>\n
