Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ameera Mohammed Saleh, Dean of the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, the Department of Field Crops at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific workshop entitled “Uncontrolled Grazing in the City.” The lecture was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Razan Zuhair Abdul-Fattah.
The workshop aimed to highlight the major impacts and problems resulting from uncontrolled grazing in residential areas, which has created environmental and health challenges requiring urgent, practical solutions.
At the conclusion of the workshop, several recommendations were proposed to reduce the phenomenon of uncontrolled grazing in urban areas. These included enacting local regulations to restrict grazing within city limits, designating specific grazing zones outside urban boundaries with adequate water sources and environmental supervision, and enhancing awareness campaigns for livestock owners about the environmental and aesthetic damage caused by such practices.
The recommendations also emphasized strengthening municipal and environmental monitoring, supporting alternative livelihood projects such as intensive feed production or modern livestock rearing systems in rural areas, and promoting coordination among relevant authorities—including municipalities, agriculture, environment, and environmental police—to ensure effective implementation.
This activity contributes to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
