Department of Food Sciences

The Department of Food Sciences was established in 1963 under the name of the Department of Food Industries and Chemistry. In 1965 it was called the Department of Industries and Dairy. In 1975 it was called the Department of Food Industries and in 1999 it was called the Department of Food Sciences and Biotechnologies. The department is one of the ten scientific departments in the College of Agriculture / University of Baghdad. As all departments of the college, the duration of bachelor study is four years distributed over two semesters per year (spring and fall), during which the student is introduced to various general agricultural sciences, with a focus on food sciences, and after passing the prescribed 136 units, to obtain a bachelor’s degree. The mission of the department is to prepare and qualify technicians specialized in food science, which includes three main axes: food and dairy processing, food and milk chemistry, and microbiology in food and milk. The number of graduates of the department since its inception till 2015 has reached more than 3,000 students.
