As assigned by the Head of the Department of Soil and Water Resources Sciences, Prof. Shatha Majid Nafawah, and in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goal on Quality Education, a scientific committee composed of several faculty members conducted a field visit to the provinces of Wasit, Muthanna, and Dhi Qar. The visit aimed to describe soil pedons and collect soil samples from both natural profiles and auger pits related to the PhD research project of the doctoral student Ammar Jabbar Abdulrazzaq, supervised by Asst. Prof. Qusay Abdulrazzaq Waheeb. The student’s dissertation is entitled:
“Developing a GIS-Based Tool for Soil Classification According to the U.S. Soil Taxonomy Using Machine Learning Techniques.”
The project seeks to reduce the time and effort required for soil classification, enhance the accuracy of technical procedures through machine learning applications, and minimize human errors in the classification process.
During the visit, committee members participated in describing soil pedons, offering feedback, and providing guidance to support the evaluation of the research. They also received a detailed explanation from the student regarding the nature of the study and the objectives he aims to achieve.
