The Department of Desertification Control at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences welcomed first-year students for the new academic year, in the presence of the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Ameera Mohammed Saleh, the Head of the Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Afaq Ibrahim Jumaa, and several faculty members. The event aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4: Quality Education.
The reception included a welcome address for new students, during which university regulations and academic guidelines were introduced. The session also highlighted the unique status of the Department of Desertification Control as the first specialized academic department in desertification control in Iraq and the only department of its kind in Baghdad Governorate within the University of Baghdad.
Students were introduced to the department’s scientific and research objectives and its key areas of focus, including land degradation studies, natural resource management, soil and water conservation, afforestation and forest cover development, and the linkage between these fields and climate change. The department also emphasized modern scientific approaches and advanced technologies aimed at mitigating desertification and environmental degradation, contributing to sustainable development and community service.
The Dean of the College and the Head of the Department affirmed the college’s and department’s commitment to supporting students and providing a stimulating educational environment that enhances both scientific and practical skills.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the department extended its best wishes to students for a successful academic year and a promising start toward a scientific future dedicated to environmental protection and combating desertification.
