Dr. Hussein Abbas Mohammed, a faculty member in the Department of Desertification Control at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad, recently participated in a scientific awareness seminar titled:
“The Impact of Climate Change on Land Desertification, Sustainable Production, and Methods for Energy and Water Conservation.”
The event was hosted at Al-Salam Hall by the University of Technology, organized by the Women’s Affairs Unit and the Central Library in collaboration with the Continuing Education Center.
Focus on Innovation and AI
The seminar addressed the escalating threat of desertification fueled by climate change. Dr. Mohammed emphasized the critical role of modern technologies—specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI)—in managing field irrigation. By integrating AI, the agricultural sector can optimize water and energy resources, ensuring both productivity and long-term sustainability.
Strategic Goals and Recommendations
The seminar aimed to boost crop yields while reducing the environmental footprint of irrigation. Key recommendations included:
  • Strengthening national policies to combat desertification.

  • Encouraging localized Research and Development (R&D).

  • Fostering international partnerships to deploy sustainable solutions within local communities.

Alignment with Global Goals
The seminar’s themes directly align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger

  • Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

  • Goal 13: Climate Action

  • Goal 15: Life on Land

At the conclusion of the event, Dr. Hussein Abbas Mohammed was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his distinguished contributions to environmental awareness and his ongoing efforts to serve the academic and ecological landscape of Iraq.
