Mazen Fadhil Khudair from Department of Agricultural Economics  successfully defended his MSc.  work with the title ” Study of Chemical Pollution and Soil Salinity Indicators Using Chemical Properties and Spectral Indices for Selected Soils of the Middle Euphrates Region “
The dissertation aimed to investigate the distribution of the chemical properties of salt-affected soils, determine their nature, and assess the level of soil, water, and plant contamination with heavy metals in salt-affected soils located near pollution sources. It also sought to evaluate pollution levels using pollution indices, investigate the effects of interactions between chemical properties and pollutants on soil degradation in the study area, determine the nature of the association between heavy metals and soil components in salt-affected soils, and monitor soil salinity and heavy-metal contamination using spectral indices.
The researcher recommended the implementation of strict environmental standards to reduce emissions and waste from industrial and health facilities, and to require such facilities to treat their waste before disposal or burial. He also recommended adopting modern methods of chemical fertilization and weed and pest control to reduce the environmental impacts of agricultural activities, or alternatively adopting organic and biological methods for fertilization and pest management.
The researcher further recommended adopting environmental pollution indices as criteria for assessing soil, water, and plant quality, as well as using spectral indices to monitor soil salinity and contamination.
