Eilaf Mustafa Hamoud from the Department of Agricultural Extension and Technology Transfer successfully defended her MSc. thesis entitled “Sustainability Problems of Date Palm Orchards in Babylon Governorate.”
The study aimed to identify the problems affecting the sustainability of date palm orchards in Babylon Governorate, including those related to irrigation, fertilization, agricultural practices associated with palm trees, pests, harvesting, packaging and marketing. It also addressed problems related to agricultural extension, as well as those associated with ministries and governmental and local authorities.
The researcher recommended that the Agricultural Extension Center and the Directorate of Agriculture in Babylon Governorate jointly organize, plan, and implement a short-term agricultural extension program to educate and train date palm farmers on irrigation, fertilization, agricultural practices associated with palm trees, pest management, harvesting, packaging, and marketing. The program should also take into consideration addressing the farmers’ knowledge and practices related to the five identified areas, according to a priority-based system.
