Maysoon Abdul Kadhim from the Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation titled “The Role of Soil Organisms and Organic Matter in Soil Carbon Sequestration and Their Relationship with Certain Soil Health Parameters and Barley Plant Growth.”
The study aimed to enhance the organic carbon pool to improve soil health, physical and chemical properties, and water capacity, as well as to support the balance of the microbial community.
The researcher recommended adopting an integrated soil management approach that combines mycorrhizal fungi, bacteria, and algae. Additionally, she suggested expanding long-term studies and conducting experiments to assess the sustainability of these treatments on organic carbon accumulation and greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in cereal cropping systems such as barley.
