The University of Baghdad has achieved a milestone for Iraq by appearing today as the first Iraqi university in the QS Sustainability Ranking. It has attained outstanding results in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024, assessing the global universities’ commitment to sustainable development goals. The university has secured the position (921-944) globally, marking the first appearance of any Iraqi university in the ranking in the past two years. It also secured the top position locally and ranked 267 in Asia.

This ranking comprises three main areas: environmental impact, social impact, and governance, with each area including specific performance indicators. In the environmental impact category, the university achieved the global rank (875), relying on three indicators, notably environmental sustainability, where it secured the rank (737), and environmental education, where it achieved the rank (326) globally.

In the social impact category, consisting of five indicators, the university excelled in the knowledge exchange indicator, securing the rank (712) globally. In the third and final category related to governance, the university achieved the global rank (469).

It is worth noting that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015, represent the culmination of decades of work to address major issues facing our world. This ranking aims to support those efforts, recognizing the crucial role that universities can play in leading the comprehensive implementation across various sectors related to sustainable development goals. This, in turn, allows for the assessment of their commitment to achieving sustainable development goals.
