The Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad, celebrated the annual commemoration of World Soil Day in the Plant Protection Department hall. World Soil Day is observed globally on December 5th each year, recognizing the significance of soil in the natural system and its role as part of the ecosystem that impacts human societies. The event was attended by Dr. Shatha Majid Nafawa, the head of the department, along with faculty members and students.
The ceremony began with a speech by Dr. Shatha Majid Nafawa, where she discussed the process of selecting the name and highlighted the United Nations’ recognition. She emphasized the importance of soil as a fundamental element in agricultural production and the necessity of preserving it from deterioration and pollution. Dr. Nafawa stressed that this non-renewable natural resource should be safeguarded, sustained, and scientifically utilized to achieve food security in the country. The event also included welcoming the new students accepted into the department and introducing them to the faculty members, wishing them success in their academic journey.
