The defense of the doctoral dissertation titled “Genetic Characterization of Local Gerbera Plant Using Next Generation Sequencing Technology” took place at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad. The dissertation was presented by student Nora Jabir Jasim from the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening.

The study aimed to explore the possibility of cultivating Gerbera in saline environments, as well as analyzing a wide range of plants using next-generation sequencing technology and tissue culture techniques to compare three varieties of Gerbera: white, orange, and red. The study also examined their tolerance to different saline concentrations.

The researcher recommended a comprehensive diagnosis of the Iraqi Gerbera genome, complete diagnosis of the chloroplast, identification of non-coding regions in the genome, and identification of genes responsible for salt tolerance, along with gene expression profiling using bioinformatics techniques.

Congratulations to the researcher on this achievement.
