The Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources organized a seminar as part of its cultural season titled “The Use of Ornamental Plants in the Bio-remediation Technique of Soil Polluted with Some Heavy Elements (Ni, Cd, Pb).” The seminar was presented by Dr. Kazem Maki Nasser in the presence of the department head, Assistant Professor Dr. Shatha Majid Nafawa, and several faculty members and postgraduate students.
During the lecture, the speaker highlighted the importance of bio-remediation technology, which involves a series of processes carried out by plants or soil microorganisms to absorb toxic heavy elements from the soil and water. It is an excellent technique for removing pollutants with low cost and high efficiency compared to other chemical methods. Additionally, it is environmentally friendly, as it eliminates or reduces the harmful effects of pollutants with minimal undesirable by-products.
