A workshop on the phenomenon of suicide among youth and adults organized by the Agricultural Engineering Sciences.
The Women’s Affairs Unit at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences at the University of Baghdad, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, organized a workshop titled “The Phenomenon of Suicide Among Youth and Adults,” attended by a number of faculty members and students from the college.
The workshop included lectures delivered by Assistant Lecturer Zainab Abdul Jabbar Dawy from the Ministry of Interior and Dr. Hassan Ali Hassan, Director of the Diwan Affairs Department at the University of Baghdad.
The workshop addressed an introduction to the phenomenon of suicide, defining suicide, common causes, global and local statistics on suicide, and the social and psychological impacts of suicide on individuals, families, and society.
The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness of the causes of suicide and its influencing factors and to educate participants by providing accurate information about mental health and ways to cope with psychological pressures.
The workshop recommended combating discrimination, violence, and poverty, as these factors can increase the risk of suicide. It emphasized the importance of ensuring easy access to mental health services and psychological treatment, establishing 24-hour helplines to provide psychological support for those in need, and encouraging open and frank discussions about mental health and negative emotions. Additionally, it called for providing accurate and reliable information about suicide and ways to prevent it and organizing widespread awareness campaigns about suicide, its causes, and contributing factors.
