As part of efforts to achieve sustainable development goals, including eradicating hunger, ensuring food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture, Dr. Ishraq Muneer Mohammed, a faculty member in the Department of Food Sciences at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad, participated in the Second Sustainable Development Festival organized by the College of Science at Al-Nahrain University.

Dr. Ishraq and her student, Adhraa Ghazwan, participated by presenting a scientific poster on a graduation research project that explored the utilization of carrot waste to achieve sustainability, enhance the nutritional value of food, and reduce waste. The research aimed to:

  1. Utilize carrot waste as a practical opportunity to achieve sustainability.
  2. Enhance the nutritional value of food by transforming this waste into high-nutritional-value materials.
  3. Contribute to improving the food system through the development of technology and research in this field.

During her participation, Dr. Ishraq emphasized the importance of sustainable development as an integrated approach that balances economic growth, environmental protection, and social justice. She highlighted that scientific research and innovation play a pivotal role in supporting sustainability strategies. She also praised the collaboration between academic institutions and various sectors in finding practical solutions to environmental and developmental challenges.

The project received significant appreciation from the attendees and was selected among the top ten projects at the festival, reflecting the efforts of the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences in supporting innovative scientific research that contributes to achieving sustainable development goals.
