It is possible to conduct experiments on soil physics, such as soil texture, apparent and real soil density, and measure the moisture description curve, water conductivity, and soil consistency. The laboratory contains a balance without mattresses, a soil bulk density balance, a shaking device for dry sifting, a device for dispersing soil particles, a section pump, a tensiometer, an automatic shaker, and a pressure cooker. The laboratory was established in 1967 so that undergraduate and graduate students would benefit from this laboratory.

The laboratory is interested in all specializations of soil chemistry, as experiments can be conducted to study the chemical characteristics and characteristics of the soil, the most prominent of which are:

  • Determination of dissolved ions in soil solution.

  • Estimating and diagnosing the stages of salinity in soil.

The Soil Fertility and Fertilizer Laboratory seeks to provide a suitable and convenient place to conduct laboratory experiments for preliminary and postgraduate studies by providing modern scientific equipment as well as relevant chemicals and laboratory tools, under the supervision of teaching staff related to the specialty and with the assistance of assistant teachers and technicians.

Objectives:

It aims to pay attention to the state of fertile soil and evaluate it and the amount of nutrients it contains ready for ideal production of different crops, in addition to paying attention to the factors that control the fertility state of the soil, such as the soil content of organic matter, the degree of soil interaction, soil salinity, the effectiveness of soil microbial revival, the moisture content of the soil and other influencing factors. In the readiness of elements and everything related to the concepts of nutrition, plant physiology, fertilizers, their technologies, and methods of adding them.

About the Lab

The laboratory is concerned with conducting the following experiments: determining the soil texture by the density method, identifying the soil color using a Munsell color chart, drying soil and plant samples, estimating soil moisture content, determining the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the soil using the methylene blue method, and incinerating plant specimens and soil samples.

Additionally, experiments in the field of meteorology can be conducted, such as measuring temperature, humidity, wind speed, and direction. Students are trained to execute remote sensing programs and use satellite imagery to identify spectral evidence related to plants and soil, producing maps. The laboratory is equipped with a sensitive balance, an electric oven, a soil and plant incineration furnace (muffle furnace), an electric shaker (Stirrer), a soil salinity measuring device, a pH measuring device, and devices for measuring temperature and wind speed.

The laboratory specializes in the analysis of soil, water, and plants. It conducts experiments related to soil analysis, such as electrical conductivity, soil reaction, soluble negative and positive ions, cation exchange capacity, organic matter, soil structure, apparent and bulk density, soil porosity, moisture content, field capacity, wilting point, plasticity limits, liquidity limits, specific weight, saturation percentage, and estimation of nutrient elements in the soil. Additionally, it covers gypsum, carbonate minerals, and plant analyses, including plant carbohydrate digestion, absorption concentration of plant elements, total chlorophyll, and water analyses like sodium adsorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage, total water hardness, dissolved oxygen, dissolved carbon dioxide, electrical conductivity, reaction degree, and microbial life.

Moreover, the laboratory conducts experiments related to soil pollution, estimating heavy metal contaminants in soil, water pollution, and plant contamination by elements such as lead and cadmium. The laboratory is equipped with a microscope, oven, spectrophotometer, flame photometer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, electrical conductivity meter, soil reaction estimation device, micro-Kjeldahl apparatus for nitrogen estimation, water purification distillation apparatus, centrifuge, mechanical shaker, magnetic stirrer, water bath, sand bath, moisture characteristic curve estimation device, four-tier balance, and plant water stress measurement device.
