The College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences at the University of Baghdad recently hosted the defense of a doctoral dissertation entitled “Optimal Pump Discharge Selection and Smart Irrigation Scheduling in Designing Irrigation Networks for Green Spaces (Turfgrass)” by the student Harith Taha Yaseen from the Department of Agricultural Machinery and Equipment.
The dissertation aimed to analyze aerial imagery to detect over- and under-irrigation caused by pump pressure and discharge in relation to plant growth characteristics, using spectral reflectance data. It also sought to determine the appropriate irrigation discharge and its efficiency for each type of sprinkler using digital image data.
The researcher recommended expanding the study to include other crop types and different climatic conditions to verify the generalizability of the results and their applicability in diverse agricultural environments. Since no significant differences were observed in sprinkler discharge, it was suggested that additional experiments be conducted incorporating new variables.
