Reem Ali Abdullah from Department of Food Science successfully defended his Ph.D. work with the title (Production, Purification, and Characterization of the Chitinase Enzyme from a Local Bacterial Isolate)
The study aimed to isolate local Bacillus licheniformis bacteria from soil to produce the chitinase enzyme. The researcher focused on extracting and partially purifying the enzyme, followed by a detailed characterization to determine the optimal temperature and pH levels for its maximum activity and stability.
The researcher recommended further studies on strain improvement using both traditional and modern biotechnological methods to enhance productivity and reduce production time. Furthermore, the study suggested testing the enzyme against a wider range of pathogenic fungi to evaluate its potential as a safe and effective biological pesticide.
