A training course in agricultural engineering sciences on closed irrigation
The Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, organized a training course entitled “Closed Irrigation” under the auspices of the Dean of the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, Professor Dr. Kazem Daily Hassan, and under the supervision of the Head of Soil Sciences and Water Resources Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Shatha Majed Nafawa, in presence of a number employees of the Ministry of Agriculture (Agricultural Research Department, Mesopotamia General Company for Seeds, and General Company for Agricultural Equipment) and Ministry of Water Resources. The course dealt with the definition of closed irrigation methods, which will achieve many benefits, the most important of which is the reduction of agricultural areas allocated for the implementation of open channels and the reduction of implementation costs compared to other methods, in addition to the ease and speed of implementation, which contribute to controlling water distributions, reducing abuses on water quotas, increasing the yield of dunums, and increasing the efficiency of water transfer from the source to the agricultural units. Under the scarcity of water, it is necessary to shift from open irrigation to closed irrigation, which represents the ideal solution for not wasting water and rationing uses. Professor Dr. Alaa Saleh Aati delivered a lecture entitled (Closed Irrigation). The lecture dealt with the importance of the piped irrigation system, which is one of the options that, if possible, can be implemented correctly and can determine the demand for irrigation water without compromising net irrigation requirements as well as improving water use efficiency and expanding irrigated agricultural areas. Dr. Tariq Kamal Masoud also delivered a lecture entitled (Methods of Estimating Evapotranspiration and Scheduling Different Irrigation). The lecturer explained the importance of estimating water needs according to multiple methods and the most important equations that estimate water needs. Dr. Hadeel Amer Jabbar gave a lecture entitled (Different Irrigation Systems). The lecture dealt with methods of adding water to the soil, as the immersion method was the prevailing method in the past, but with the great development in the science of irrigation, systems, and techniques of adding water to the soil were modernized, and the latest of which was the method of irrigation with buried or underground pipes (irrigation closed) as well as sprinkler and drip irrigation systems.
