Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, Professor Dr. Amira Mohammed Saleh, and under the supervision of Dr. Shaimaa Abdulkhaleq Al-Hamawandi, Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit, the unit—in cooperation with the Department of Extension and Agricultural Technology Transfer and the Continuing Education Unit—organized a workshop titled “Employing Information and Communication Technology to Empower Rural Women in Achieving Sustainable Agricultural Production.”
The workshop was presented by Assistant Professor Jumana Qais Tawfiq and attended by the Head of the Extension and Agricultural Technology Transfer Department, along with a number of postgraduate students and college staff.
Information and communication technology (ICT) enhances rural women’s access to knowledge and modern agricultural resources. These tools provide opportunities to improve efficiency and increase productivity through smart and simple applications. They also support women’s economic and social empowerment by offering marketing and training platforms tailored to their needs.
The success of such initiatives depends on understanding the local context and designing technological solutions that suit cultural and educational diversity. It requires building women’s capacities through intensive training focused on the practical use of digital tools. Additionally, affordable devices and reliable connectivity services must be provided in rural areas.
Community awareness plays a crucial role in breaking down social barriers that limit technology adoption. The project requires periodic follow-up and continuous evaluation to ensure the sustainability of its positive impacts. This approach promotes digital equality and contributes to achieving sustainable development goals.
