Hala Faisal Khazal from  Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening successfully defended her Ph.D. work with the title (The Role of Melatonin and Gibberellin Foliar Application on the Growth, Yield, and Some Medicinally Active Compounds of Basil Plants under Water Stress Conditions)
The study aimed to investigate the interactive effects of melatonin and gibberellin foliar application and irrigation scheduling on the vegetative growth, yield, and some medically active compounds of red basil plants.
The researcher recommended adopting an irrigation interval of every 5 days for basil plants, with the possibility of studying this on other plant species. Additionally, she suggested applying gibberellin at higher concentrations than those used in the study to determine the optimal concentration for basil, as well as applying melatonin at a concentration of 200 mg L⁻¹. Further studies were recommended on other plants, particularly medicinal species, and on the nature of the interaction between gibberellin and melatonin under different concentrations and across various plant types.
