The Field Crops Department organized a scientific workshop titled “The Use of Plant Tissue Culture in Achieving Sustainable Development”, delivered by Dr. Idris Suhail Najm and Dr. Yusra Ismail Hussein, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (Quality Education), and attended by a number of faculty members from the department.
The workshop addressed the fundamental and applied concepts of plant tissue culture and its scientific principles. It also highlighted the role of tissue culture in achieving sustainable development and its connection to food security.
The aim of the workshop was to enhance participants’ skills in micropropagation techniques and the production of disease-free plants, while emphasizing economic and industrial applications and improving the efficiency of scientific staff in using modern biotechnological techniques.
The workshop recommended supporting the establishment and development of plant tissue culture laboratories in academic and research institutions, strengthening continuous training programs for technical staff and researchers in this field, and encouraging the use of tissue culture for propagating strategic crops such as wheat and date palm. It also emphasized supporting research on producing salt- and drought-tolerant plants to address climate change, as well as enhancing cooperation between universities, research centers, and the agricultural sector.
