Prof. Dr. Iskandar Hussein Ali, Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad, participated with a research paper presented at a scientific symposium organized by the Iraqi Al-Hikma House / Center for Information and Decision Support.
The paper aimed to analyze the current status of the agricultural sector and explore ways to enhance its development. It discussed key challenges facing agriculture, including water scarcity and climate change, as well as the factors contributing to increasing the agricultural share of the national GDP.
The study recommended several development strategies, such as strengthening the agricultural infrastructure, adopting modern technologies—particularly in irrigation and water-use efficiency—enhancing water governance, and implementing cropping patterns that maximize the net return per unit of water. It also emphasized the importance of supporting small-scale projects for their adaptability and contribution to sustainable development.
At the conclusion of the symposium, Dr. Iskandar received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Al-Hikma House, in recognition of his distinguished scientific contributions.
This activity supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
