Hussein Abbas Abd Mustafa from the Department of Animal Production successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation entitled “Genetic Polymorphisms of Some Candidate Genes and Short Tandem Repeats and Their Effects on Productive and Physiological Performance of Iraqi Chickens.”
The dissertation aimed to identify the genetic polymorphisms of the growth hormone and growth hormone-inhibiting hormone genes, as well as different alleles and short tandem repeat sequences, determine allele frequencies and genotype frequencies in Iraqi chickens, and investigate their effects on productive performance and some physiological traits, with the aim of utilizing these genetic markers to improve Iraqi chickens.
The researcher recommended incorporating the molecular markers identified in this study into the national breeding program for Iraqi local chickens to reduce the effort and time required for conventional selection.
