The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences implemented a distinguished graduation project entitled:
“Design and Implementation of a Sustainable Home Garden Model”
The project was carried out by student Zainab Ismail Akbar under the supervision of Dr. Suhad Abdulameer Mahdi, within the framework of supporting environmental initiatives and promoting the concept of sustainability on campus, as part of the afforestation campaign and the planting of vegetation around the wooden pergola.
The project aims to apply the principles of sustainable design through the establishment of a model garden that takes environmental, functional, and aesthetic aspects into consideration. The design relied on local plants suitable for the Iraqi environment, including medicinal and aromatic plants, cacti and succulents with low water requirements, as well as annual and perennial herbaceous plants.
This project represents a practical step toward reducing water consumption through the selection of drought-tolerant plants, supporting and preserving local plant biodiversity, improving environmental quality within the university campus, and creating sustainable and eco-friendly green spaces.
Moreover, the project promotes awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture and its role in addressing environmental challenges. It also contributes to linking theoretical knowledge with practical application in the field of landscape engineering and preparing students for the labor market through the implementation of real-world projects and the development of sustainable environmental design skills.
This project comes in line with the College’s orientation toward supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), enhancing its role in spreading environmental awareness, and building a healthy and sustainable educational environment.
